Health And Safety Policy
Gardeners South Ruislip Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners South Ruislip is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our staff, clients, visitors, contractors and members of the public. We recognise our responsibility to manage risks associated with gardening work, including the use of machinery, tools, vehicles, chemicals and working outdoors in changing weather conditions.
This Health and Safety Policy sets out our general approach, responsibilities and arrangements. It applies to all employees, subcontractors and anyone working on behalf of Gardeners South Ruislip while engaged in our gardening and related services across our service area.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our main objectives are to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property or the environment during all gardening activities. To achieve this, we will:
Identify hazards and assess risks associated with our work, including gardening equipment, access to gardens, working at height, manual handling, and the use of pesticides or other substances.
Implement proportionate control measures to reduce risks to the lowest reasonably practicable level.
Provide information, instruction, training and supervision so that work is carried out safely and competently.
Consult with staff on health and safety matters and encourage ongoing feedback and reporting of hazards or concerns.
Continually review and improve our health and safety performance.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners South Ruislip has overall responsibility for ensuring that this policy is implemented and maintained. Management will:
Ensure that risk assessments are carried out for typical gardening tasks and that safe systems of work are in place.
Provide suitable equipment, tools and machinery that are well maintained and safe to use.
Ensure that personal protective equipment is made available, is appropriate for the task, and is used correctly by staff.
Keep records of training, maintenance, incidents and any corrective actions.
Review this policy regularly and update it as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, guidance or our operations.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee and person working on behalf of Gardeners South Ruislip has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All staff are expected to:
Follow safe working procedures and instructions provided by management and supervisors.
Use tools, machinery and personal protective equipment safely and for their intended purpose only.
Report any accidents, near misses, unsafe conditions or defective equipment as soon as practicable.
Cooperate with management in implementing health and safety measures and attending training when required.
Behave responsibly at all times when representing the company at client premises or in public areas.
Safe Use of Tools, Machinery and Vehicles
The nature of gardening work involves the regular use of hand tools, power tools, lawnmowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers and similar equipment. To control risks, we will:
Ensure that only trained and competent staff operate mechanical equipment.
Carry out regular inspection, maintenance and servicing of tools and machinery.
Provide guards, safety features and emergency stop controls where applicable, and ensure they are never removed or tampered with.
Operate company vehicles safely and in accordance with road traffic legislation and company procedures, including loading and unloading tools and waste securely.
Chemicals, Pesticides and Hazardous Substances
Where the use of chemicals, such as pesticides, weed killers or cleaning agents is required, Gardeners South Ruislip will:
Assess the risks associated with each substance and follow the relevant safety data sheets.
Use the least hazardous products that are effective for the task.
Store, transport and dispose of chemicals safely and in accordance with applicable regulations.
Ensure that only trained and authorised staff use pesticides or any controlled products, and that they follow label instructions and control measures.
Manual Handling and Physical Work
Gardening often involves digging, lifting, carrying and repetitive movements. To reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, we will:
Assess manual handling tasks and use mechanical aids or team lifts where appropriate.
Train staff in safe lifting techniques, posture and the importance of taking breaks from heavy or repetitive work.
Plan tasks so that heavy items such as soil, compost or paving materials are stored and moved safely.
Working at Height and Access
Some gardening tasks require working at height, for example trimming hedges, pruning trees or accessing raised areas. We will:
Use suitable access equipment, such as ladders or platforms, that is in good condition and appropriate for the task.
Avoid working at height where it can be reasonably eliminated or reduced.
Ensure staff are trained in the safe use of ladders and in recognising unstable ground and other site-specific risks.
Environmental and Public Safety
We recognise that safe gardening work also protects neighbours, passers-by and the wider environment. Gardeners South Ruislip will:
Set up work areas safely, using barriers or signs where necessary to keep the public away from hazards.
Control noise, dust and debris as far as reasonably practicable.
Dispose of green waste and other materials responsibly through licensed routes.
Plan work to minimise disruption to residents and local businesses within our service area.
Incident Reporting and Continuous Improvement
All accidents, incidents, near misses and complaints relating to health and safety must be reported promptly. We will investigate them to identify root causes and implement corrective actions. Lessons learned will be shared with staff to help prevent recurrence.
This Health and Safety Policy reflects the commitment of Gardeners South Ruislip to maintaining safe and healthy working conditions while delivering reliable gardening services. The policy will be reviewed on a regular basis and updated whenever there are significant changes in our work or in relevant health and safety requirements.
